The purpose of the flue tile is to contain the heat and byproducts of fire and safely carry these through the chimney to the outside. Cracks hinder this process. A clay tile liner with spaces or gaps between tiles, or cracks within them, can affect the draft of your chimney, allow in moisture that damages the masonry, and increase the risk of a chimney fire.
In order to repair clay tiles that are damaged, the old tiles must be removed up to the damage point, by chipping them out with specialized tools. The technician reapplies fire-resistant mortar on the seams of the tiles, then resets and stabilizes the flue structure, restoring integrity to your chimney flue.
False flue tiles are those that do not serve any venting purpose but are in place merely for aesthetic reasons. Years ago it was common for masons to set false flues directly into the crown mortar material and fill its empty cavity with miscellaneous bricks and debris, then seal it off from the elements with a layer of mortar. But this process poses a risk to the integrity of the chimney crown: the top of the false flue, though sealed, always allows in some amount of water. Once there, the water freezes and expands according to the outside temperature, which then, if the tile is embedded in the crown, will cause the crown to crack.
When our technician rebuilds a crown, he removes the false tile and sets it ON TOP OF the crown base material, while also grinding weep holes into the base of the flue tile, thus allowing the water to run freely through and out rather than to collect and cause damage. So, although false flue tiles are strictly aesthetic, this process gives the homeowner the option to preserve the look of their chimney while removing the risk of damaging the crown.
Before: Damage to the false flue and crown from water seeping in through the top of the false flue and expanding and contracting, cracking the flue and the crown.
After: The technician has placed the new false flue ON TOP OF the crown mortar and created weeping holes for water to escape the flue without damage to the flue or crown.
